NABS attended the Australian Sign Language Interpreters’ Association (ASLIA) National Conference (ANC) in Perth, Western Australia on August 29-31.

The ANC is the largest gathering of Auslan/English interpreters and allied professionals that is regularly held in Australia.

This year’s event was held at the Duxton Hotel Perth and attracted a large number of interpreters and students.

NABS had a range of information on offer about its services and was delighted for the opportunity to reconnect with so many familiar faces and to meet new ones as well.

Izaac rides proud at Queensland Show

Posted by Communications@NABS on 21 August 2014

Being partially deaf and mute has not stopped Izaac Brindley from doing what he loves – riding horses.

The nineteen-year-old Queenslander first started horse riding at the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) at Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast.

He is now training for competitions and showing miniature horses in local agriculture and horse breed shows.

This month, Izaac rode in demonstrations at the Royal Queensland Show (Brisbane Ekka) on Gypsy Cob and RDA horses.

He was also sponsored by Wrangler to wear his very own cowboy hat, and Wrangler belt, shirt, jeans and boots.

Izaac is working with his carer and horse trainer Michael Laffan to start their own not-for-profit organisation to teach others about horses and farm activities.

While Izaac faces daily challenges associated with his disabilities, he enjoys attending social activities and looking after his animals.

Izaac uses Auslan to communicate and his sister Jayne works in the National Auslan Booking Service (NABS) Communications team.

On Saturday 26th July, NABS was represented at the ‘Tasmanian Health Conference’ held at the Menzies Centre in Hobart.

Over 150 people attended to discuss the state of health services and workforce issues.

NABS Tasmania Interpreter Ali Dowl met many people and provided information about NABS interpreters.

This was a very successful event.

New contacts were made with many doctors, health workers and education providers.

NABS thanks the Australian Medical Association (AMA) for the opportunity to participate in this great conference.
