Important information about NABS after 30 June 2024

For clients aged 65 and over, without a NDIS plan.

We want to let you know about a change in accessing free interpreting services for medical and health appointments.

What is changing

There will be changes coming to the National Auslan Interpreter Booking and Payment Service (NABS) program after 30 June 2024.

Free interpreting and captioning services for health and medical appointments are still available.

From 1 July 2024, you will need to access your NABS interpreting through a different program: the National Sign Language Program (NSLP) for people 65 years and older.  Interpreting services under the NSLP will need to be arranged through Deaf Connect.

Why it is changing

The National Sign Language Program (signed NSLP from now) is provided by the Department of Health and Aged Care to support older Deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing people who are not eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The NSLP provides a similar service to NABS – but also includes other services, such as free interpreting in social and professional settings like banking and attending weddings, funerals, clubs and cultural activities. It will now be expanded to include medical settings.

For more information about the NSLP, visit the Department of Health and Aged Care’s website. If you have any questions about this change, please contact

While NABS and Wesley Mission Queensland have proudly supported the Deaf community for many years, we know that this change will streamline services and better support the needs of Deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing people.

How to book an interpreter for a future appointment

1.    Bookings up until 30 June 2024

If you have an appointment between now and 30 June 2024 you will still need to book an interpreter through NABS

2.    Bookings after 30 June 2024 where an interpreter has already been booked by NABS

If you already have an interpreter booked by NABS for an appointment after 30 June 2024 then the booking, with your consent, can be transferred to Deaf Connect.  NABS will contact you soon about your booking.

3.    Bookings after 30 June 2024

For all new bookings after 30 June 2024 you will not contact NABS.  You can make a booking for interpreters with Deaf Connect.  You can contact the Deaf Connect bookings team in a number of ways:

If you have any questions about this change, you can contact NABS:

The team at NABS have enjoyed booking interpreters for you over many years.  We are very grateful to our staff and interpreters for assisting the Deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing community and will be supporting our team through these changes.
