Health Services Covered by NABS - Glossary

NABS provides a FREE service to Sign Language Users and Health Care Providers for private medical appointments. On this page are some of the services NABS can cover. There are other Specialists and Health Care Services not on this list.  Please ask NABS staff if you are not sure whether NABS can cover your service.

GP and Specialist Your doctor.  Sometimes your doctor refers you to a Specialist. 
Acupuncture Tiny needles put into important points on your body to help you heal.
Audiologist Health Care Provider for hearing tests and hearing aids.
Aboriginal Health Worker Person who helps improve health in Aboriginal communities.
Chiropractor Health Care Provider who treats your spinal bones and joints if they are sore.  Also see Physiotherapist.
Dentist Health Care Provider who checks and treats your teeth. Also new dentures.
Diabetes Education Diabetes (blood sugar) education workshop.
Dietician Health Care Provider who gives advice on healthy food and diet.
Exercise Physiologist Health Care Provider who studies the body's response to physical activity.
Endocrinologist Specialist who treats glands and hormones. They treat conditions such as diabetes, menopause, osteoporosis, thyroid diseases and cholesterol diseases.
Family Planning/Sexual Health Birth control, pregnancy, and sexual health (sexual behaviour, safe sex and STDs).
Gynaecologist / Obstetrician / IVF Specialist for women's health and birth.  IVF is to help become pregnant.
Iridologist Health Care Provider who looks in your eyes to see your health problems.
Medical Imaging X-Ray, Ultrasound, CAT scan, MRI.
Mental Health Worker Counsellor, psychiatrist, psychologist who helps with mental and emotional issues.
Naturopath Health Care Provider who gives advice on natural medicines.
Occupational Therapy Health Care Provider who helps with the independence and health of a person with a serious injury or illness.
Optometrist Health Care Provider who performs eye tests and prescribes new glasses.
Osteopath Health Care Provider who treats damaged muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints.
Paediatrician Doctor for children.
Psychiatrist Mental Health Doctor.
Psychologist Health Care Provider who helps manage emotional problems and behaviour problems.
Physiotherapist Health Care Provider who treats spinal, joint or muscle problems or after accidents and sport injuries.
Podiatrist or Chiropodist Foot Doctor.
Remedial Massage Massage or rubbing injury and soreness to reduce pain.
Speech Pathologist Health Care Provider who helps with speech, language, communication.
